Matin (2024-25)

On the night of December 24, 1983, six local teenagers were invited to perform before Christmas Mass in the small church of Zugliano, a village near Udine, in northern Italy. They were Detonazione, a post-punk band from the region. That evening, they played five tracks and recited a poem—Matin (Morning) by Arthur Rimbaud.

Today, vineyards grow in the fields surrounding that same church, now part of Villa Job, a natural winery run by Alessandro Job. Forty years after that singular concert, I rang his doorbell and proposed a collaboration: to create a wine named Matin, in tribute to that night and that gesture. A wine born from shared memory, and a desire to give form to the fleeting, the marginal, the rebellious.

The project questions conventional storytelling in the wine world—flipping the script by producing a wine from a story, rather than telling a story about a wine. It is an inversion, a reflection on territory through narrative rather than terroir.

The wine underwent full fermentation during a five-week solo exhibition, which also featured a sound piece based on the only known recording of the 1983 concert—blending drums with a voice reciting Rimbaud’s poem—alongside a series of photographs and a lightbox.

Fifty limited-edition bottles of Matin were bottled in Summer 2025.

Matin has been shown for a solo exhibition at SMDOT/contemporary art, Sept-Dec 2024, Udine, IT. Curator: Stefano Monti and produced in collaboration with Villa Job.
